One day Ricky is unsupervised and follows signs – imaginary dragons, symbolism, circles – that take him into the subway system where he literally cannot escape. Already stretched to their limits, the entire family searches for Ricky while he descends deeper into his own pilgrimage and a hurricane approaches. By following this unique family’s journey with a sensitive realism, director Sam Fleischner creates a subtle exploration of America’s complex problems that hit us all, whether through economics or the natural world itself.
About the Director
After a successful theatrical release, “Wah Do Dem” was included on several top ten end-of-year lists, with Amy Taubin of ArtForum calling it “one of the best narrative film debuts of the twenty-first century.” “Below The Brain”, Sam’s experimental documentary about Brooklyn’s West Indian Day Parade, premiered at BAM in September 2011. The Wall Street Journal called it "a 58-minute cyclone of color and sound…with an impressionistic intensity and an immersive accumulation of detail nearly as overwhelming as the event itself.” Sam has made several award winning short films, music videos for popular bands like MGMT, Panda Bear, TEEN, and Santigold as well as art+video installations for venues throughout the US.
