America has lost its way in taking care of its own. The shocking fact is that one in six Americans doesn’t get enough to eat on a regular basis. Even more disturbing is the fact that this new face of hunger is largely invisible. There are no breadlines in the streets, but increasing numbers of soup kitchens and food banks are feeding people who—though employed full-time—can’t make ends meet.
Amanda Garrison Kristi Jacobson has been producing and directing nonfiction films, both independently and for television, for the past decade. Her credits include Toots, which was named one of 2007’s top five documentary films by the National Board of Review, and her directorial debut, American Standoff, which premiered at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival and was broadcast on HBO. Lori Silverbush’s first feature film, On the Outs, won both the Grand Jury Award and the Audience Award at the 2005 Slamdance Film Festival— the first film to garner both top awards in the festival’s history—and was nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards. Silverbush has since adapted FC Venus for Focus Features. |
